A Simultaneous Equation exam question is given below where you are asked to “s*olve algebraically the system of equations”.*

* 3x + 2y = 17 *

* 2x + 5y = 4*

To answer the above successfully:

*Multiply both equations to make either the x or y coefficients the same**Subtract the equations to find x or y**Substitute x or y back into one of equations to find the other letter*

They have been around for thousands of years. The most ancient records of the use of simultaneous equations were found in Samaria as far back as 2000 BC.

Simultaneous equations:

*Are two equations with two unknowns**Can be solved graphically, using substitution or by elimination.*

In tests, assessments and exams you are often required to make up two equations from a real life context and then solve.
