The formula is used to solve quadratic equations which do not factorise. For example, try to factorise:

* x² + 5x + 7*

It won’t factorise!! There are no combinations of numbers which multiply to give 7 and add to give 5.

The reason that the trinomial does not factorise is because the solution to the equation (the roots) have a decimal value.

To find the roots, the quadratic equation is compared with *ax² + bx + c* to find the values of *a, b & c.*

* ax² + bx + c = 0*

* x² + 5x + 7 = 0*

Comparing the above equations: *a = 1, b = 5, c = 7*

These values are substituted into the quadratic formula to give two solutions:

.

In exams, when asked to solve a quadratic correct to a number of decimal places, or significant figures, then the quadratic formula must be used.
