The exam question below shows a trinomial which requires knowledge of the factorisation process.

*Solve the equation 2x² + 7x – 15 = 0*

Source: N5 Maths, Specimen, P1, Q4

A Trinomial means having 3 terms* e.g. x² + 3x – 10 *and factorising is about putting the expression into brackets.

An an example, factorise *x² + 3x – 10.*

Process:

*Take the number term – 10**Take the x coefficient term 3**Find two numbers which multiply to give – 10 and add to give 3**The numbers 5 & – 2 are placed into two brackets to give (x + 5)(x – 2)**Answer is: x² + 3x – 10 = (x + 5)(x – 2)*

Once a trinomial has been factorised, you may be asked to:

*Solve the trinomial (find the roots)**Sketch the parabola*
