Significant Figures
An SQA N5 Maths exam question on Significant Figures is shown below.
The Earth is approximately spherical with a radius of 6400 kilometres. Calculate the volume of the Earth giving your answer in scientific notation, correct to 2 significant figures.

Engineers and scientists often use Significant Figures to give a measure of confidence or precision in which a quantity is stated.
A figure in a number is significant if it gives some sense of quantity and accuracy.
Zeros work in a different way and we have to know when to count them and when to leave out.
If zeros are used only to show where the position of the decimal point is, then they are NOT significant.
